Position: Greenhouse Manager and Grower (North Main)

Status: Full-Time Non-Exempt (hourly not to exceed 40 hours/week)

Salary: $14.00- $15.00 per hour

Position Overview:

Founded in 1964, this family-owned local retail garden center with two locations in Rockford, Illinois, seeks an Assistant Store Manager for its North Main location. Village Green offers customers the largest selection of annual and perennials in the state line area, growing most of its own product at both locations, providing customers with premium quality and selection. Located at 2460 North Main Street, this quant retail greenhouse and garden center offers a wide variety of flowering annuals, veggies, herbs, hanging baskets, ready to plant container gardens, potted plants, annual flats and much more.

Village Green’s mission is to help customers make the interior and exterior spaces in their lives more beautiful. The Store Manager, working closely with the Chief Executive Officer, executes this mission by developing, leading and managing the production, care, purchase and sales for annuals, nursery, perennials, and other garden center inventory at the North Main location. This position oversees the daily retail and growing operations, manages the greenhouse, nursery/perennial and customer service departments, supervises the staff in these departments, and provides product knowledge and customer relations training for all staff. This position also oversees property maintenance and repairs.

As a member of Village Green’s core management team (CMT), this position also provides operational and general managerial support to the organization. CMT members not only oversee their specific area and team members but are cross-trained in all aspects of the business and make themselves available to all staff to assist and address questions, and to all customers to ensure excellent customer service.

Essential Functions and Duties:

  • Create staff work schedules, assign daily projects to staff and effectively manage their productivity
  • Opening and Closing Procedures
  • Grow and manage all plant production operations, including creating and managing production schedule, watering, plant management, quality control, disease and pest control and prevention, and application of pest management when needed
  • Daily inspections of plants and property to ensure quality control, cleanliness and safety
  • Purchase greenhouse plants and annuals for North Main consistent with company policy and budget.
  • Maintain inventory
  • Price all purchases according to company policy
  • Provide the business office with purchase orders and pricing
  • Manage compliance with budget, including submittal of reports on purchases and budget reconciliation to Chief Executive Officer
  • Ensure that all procured items meet the required quality standards and specifications
  • Provide product knowledge, growing, and nursery and plant care and maintenance training to all staff
  • Provide Point of Sale (POS) System training
  • Resolve customer concerns consistent with company policies and standards and ensure proper approval for customer discounts, returns and exchanges
  • Maintain knowledge of plant material, soils, fertilizers, growing techniques , pest management and applicator license
  • Create attractive and functional displays and manage store signage, including changing the marquee 1 time per week according to current specials, sales and promotion signage, and plant signage
  • Maintain and safe work environment and report and complete paperwork regarding staff and customer accidents
  • Maintain effective and consistent communication with the Riverside and manage product

Education and Training:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Prior agricultural or growing experience required
  • Pesticide Operator and/or Applicator required

  • Prior supervisory experience preferred but not required
  • Training or experience as interior designer an added plus
