Senior Director, Impairment Practice – National Safety Council – Itasca, IL

This position is responsible for leading the Impairment Practice Area, which includes advancing research, building awareness, and developing solutions that mitigate the impact of impairment on deaths and injuries. This role is responsible for researching the impact of impairment, by source, in the workplace, roadway, and elsewhere, along with identifying and evaluating training and technology solutions for impairment testing. The individual in this role will also identify best practices for addressing impairment in the workplace, and use the findings to identify a comprehensive set of solutions for employers and policy influencers.

This individual will leverage their experience to lead impairment initiatives pertaining to opioids, cannabis, and fatigue. Furthermore, this role will be the organization’s lead external voice on impairment and partner closely with the workplace and roadway practice area leaders to achieve impact through legislation, coalitions, and employer-based solutions.


  • Establish and oversee NSC’s impairment strategy and execution based on research and feedback from members, customers, and volunteers.
  • Orchestrate and develop the annual practice area plan and budget; set research priorities and define activity participation models driving the most impact.
  • Oversee a $3 million impairment practice P&L, including opioids, cannabis, fatigue, and other impairment initiatives.
  • Ensure that NSC delivers consistent, high-value services and experiences to stakeholders and customers.
  • Identify opportunities for new programs that will drive growth of awareness and solutions to impairment concerns in the workplace and on roadways.
  • Manage cross functional teams to execute impairment strategy, both direct reports and those in shared service functions.
  • Initiate, direct, and support efforts to influence policies, programs and positions within regulatory agencies with an emphasis on research, awareness, and solutions.
  • Oversee programs that offer member organizations, safety leaders, and volunteers an opportunity to network and educate employee groups, law makers, local communities and/or the general public on impairment issues and solutions.
  • Implement processes and best practices for operational effectiveness.
  • Set and deliver on objectives for cross-practice issues and joint initiatives; promote cross-practice exchange of information and best practices.
  • Identify and leverage strategic partners, leading scientists, authors, and, subject matter experts to create and promote solutions to mitigate impairment related injuries and deaths.
